Jefferson gives a central, south-of-the-river option, while Spencer Butte serves Eugene's "deep south."

Construction could begin in the spring, and the goal would be to open the fields for use in fall 2008.

Another winner from George Russell. This is at a time when about every elected official in the city is bitching about budget cuts and inability to pay for education and law enforcement etc. Well, whoever got the genius idea to spend thousands (if not a million depending on how this contracting works out) on this field should be summarily drummed out of government as well as those who okayed the idea.

I live in South Eugene, and yes, I could use the the fields. However, as you all know, we need to spend money on things that really matter, like education, law enforcement, infrastructure, not stupid soccer fields and we need to elect people who will do that.

10 things to do other than watch the Olympic Trials

Maybe you don't like track, or crowds. Maybe the prospect of being overcrowed with people rooting for those you've never heard of gives you pause. If so, here's 10 things to do other than watch the Trials.

10) Watch the Olympic Trials... on TV.

If you want to see the races but just don't like the crowds, then there's always the TV. You don't have to know anything, you get to choose the company you're with or without, andyway, the TV may be the way to go for you.

9) Go to a museum

The Museum of Natural and Cultural History is right across from the trials, so you can get a taste of the excitement without investing the money in the event. You also get to learn a little about Oregon's History as well.

8) Watch the Ems play

With all the attention turned away from Baseball, now would be the time to go and watch a game. Crowds might be a little lighter and so the game would be that much more enjoyable.

7) Go fishing

Everyone loves fishing, and even with the cost of a lisence it's still cheaper than seeing the Trials

6) Go to the YMCA

Working out is good for you, and if you have a decent physique, you could always talk about "back in 1772 (or 1976 or 1980) when you missed qualifying in random event by a nose"

5) Read a book

While everyone else is at the Trials, you could read a book (preferably a classic) then act all high and mighty when they come back. Ask them "what have they done with their day ?"

4) Make jokes about T&F

There's a lot out there, and it's fun to annoy track and firld enthusiasts.

3) Bake a pie

Pies are tasty

2) Go to work

While everyone else is taking leave, your dedication might get you that promotion you've always wanted.

1) Go to the Trials

It is a pretty big event, and nothing is more fun then showing your ignorance to T&F crazies. You could start chanting "USA USA" though obviously everyone is representing our country. Or, you could keep telling the person next to you that the obvious favorite is the guy in lane 7, you'll be right eventually, and you can then rub your rightness in his/her face.

Enjoy

Should Byciclists be forced to wear a Helmet?

The bicyclist that was killed downtown may have been saved if the person had worn a helmet. At least that is what the driver that hit the cyclist said. Oregon does not have a helmet law, and some bicyclists may not one. However, what does this do to our insurance? What does this do to our accident rates and the people in cars that hit bicyclists?

Unless Eugene is going to build extensive bike trails separate from the road, the best way of preventing accidents is quite simple, a mandatory helmet law. Its cheap (people give away free helmets) its easy (wearing a helmet is a simple change), and easy to police, so I would strongly suggest to those in charge that if they really want to save lives, force others to wear a helmet.

University Hosts Holocaust Denier... why?

The UofO played host to known Holocaust denier David Irving, who has made a career of not only defending Adolf Hitler, but condemning leaders who opposed him such as Winston Churchill, who he blames for escalating the European situation to war. Of course Winston Churchill was not Prime Minister when Germany invaded Poland, but when has that ever stopped anyone? (a number of times, at least those who had any ounce of brains). As definiteive proof of his Racism, here is a ditty Mr. Irving composed for his daughter:

I am a Baby Aryan

Not Jewish or Sectarian

I have no plans to marry an

Ape or Rastafarian

Case closed.

Anyway, the U of O allowed David Irving to speak at the University because it would "be wrong to limit free speech". In fact, the University has of course has the power to control who does and does not speak n their campus, and they do just that. The University's action in this matter therefore, must unfortunately, be classified as improper at best, more likely closer to stupid, idiotic, and bush league (yes, Universities have a Bush League). The University of Oregon continuously takes a position that aiding and abetting racism and hate is comprable to commiting the act oneself. So should the University be calling itself racist and anti-Semetic? They wouldn't, but the proposition should make those people with PHDs in charge of the school, who act as if they are smarter than the average bear, actually think about what they are doing next time.

New UO Basketball Arena Delayed Again

A hearings official decided that the University of Oregon is required to obtain a Conditional use permit from the City of Eugene before building the basketball arena. I suppose this is to prevent future legal troubles by those unhappy with the location, however such a move is still a dumb one.

Disregarding stupid bureaucracy, the proposed arena and location has been known for a very long time. All kinds of permits have been obtained and agreements made between the U of O and Nike, U of O and the state, U of O and the City etc. Now there are those out there who do not like the arena, I personally think the cost is awful high (most expensive college basketball arena EVER) considering that the U of O is no Duke or North Carolina. However, it's so close to actually getting done with, I'd hate to see some stupid little thing like this derail the process and probably increase the final cost as well. The name has not been released and it will not be until the parent are notified who are currently vacationing in Italy. It has not yet been stated exactly who was at fault in the accident and so I urge prudence before coming to judgement against either party. The only thing that is clear is that they somehow collided and as long as there are going to be bicyclists on the roadways, that is inevitable.

Oregon Salmon Season Closed

Due to reports of extremely low tallies of salmon being recorded at checkpoints, it looks as if salmon season is being closed early. This emergency closure may be revoked at a later time, but this is extremely unlikely.

Unfortunately for commercial fishermen, this early closure does not necessarily translate into emergency pay and they may indeed be out of luck. All we can do for now is hope that the salmon return to the rivers in good numbers in a timely matter so next season will be better.

Remember, if you go fishing for salmon now, you're poaching and if you're caught a very hefty fine will be forthcoming.

To read KEZI's full article: click here

New 4j HS Graduation Requirements Coming?

For those of you that have a student in school, or who are in school yourself, here is a new plan proposed by the Oregon Board of Education on what it would take to graduate high school.

1. By passing existing state tests in reading, writing and math, and demonstrating they've mastered public speaking and higher- level applied math. Students would get nine chances to pass the tests - three times apiece in 10th, 11th and 12th grades.
2. Getting a certain score on a national standardized test, like the ACT or the SAT.
3. Passing locally written assessments in key subjects, such as work samples or portfolios that would be graded according to a statewide scoring guide.

4j superintendent George Russell has voiced his displeasure with the plan saying he dislikes "sole dependence on exit exams."

Also, right now an estimated 15 to 20 percent of students probably couldn't pass in all subjects, does that mean more people won't get a diploma?

It's clear to me that the way to measure whether or not a student is prepared cannot be done through testing alone. So if someone gets a good GPA in required courses that teach a standard curriculum and the state monitors the quality of a school's classrooms, then that should be enough.

Second, if one has to do an aptitude test, why not just use the SAT and ACT? Kids already have to study for them. And they're a requirement for almost anyone who wants to go to college. As long as someone can score decently in the tests, then they shouldn't have to do the statewide BS that takes up more time that could be spent teaching/learning and doing real prep. for college.

So I'll leave you with this thought. If you have to teach the test, at least teach one that's important to more than just a couple bean counters and realize that the only thing that matters is ability in the field the student wishes to pursue in later life.

Social Security Thievery in Eugene

Illegal immigrants are stealing social security numbers in an effort to get a job, and, if they aren't stealing your credit you'll never find out.
Many employers do not follow through with background checks and so they don't see the name behind a number and unless they do "Jesus Martinez" can pose as John Smith.
To protect your number, do not carry it with you, memorize it (usually they only want the number, not the card). However, she only received 48.4% of the vote, so there will be a runoff between her and Jim Torrey. One must also assume that in the general election Torrey will receive about all of Nick Urhausen's votes and some of Jim Ray's, so it is clear that mayor Piercy has some work to do. I said loses because as a liberal she has absolutely no excuse to not win reelection as mayor in Eugene, Oregon and so many people must seriously have a problem with her.

Other major elections include, Barack Obama's 25% victory in the primary. John McCain beat Ron Paul (duh) in the Republican primary. Jeff Merkley beat Steve Novick for the right to face Gordon Smith in the fall by about 20,000 votes. Kate Brown, who won handily in this primary's Secretary of State race will face off against Rick Dancer who ran unopposed. Russ Burger won sheriff, and for County Commissioner incumbent Bobby Green lost to Rob Handy by a very close margin and since Handy's vote total was under 50%, there will be a runoff in that race as well. Peter DeFazio won without trying as well as he was unopposed.

Finally, measures 51 and 52 passed with about 75% of the vote, and measure 53 looks like it'll barely pass 51%-49%.

For more results check out http://www.lanegovonline.com/Elections/results/20080520.htm

Mayoral Race too Close to Call

Jim Torrey and Kitty Piercy are neck and neck in the mayoral race. The three challengers seemed somewhat to gang up on Piercy, which is expected when you're up against an incumbent.
I became disturbed when Jim Ray mentioned about 2012 being the last year in the world. That mention along with others made Mr. Ray seem a bit eccentric and his "I'm not familiar" will not win over voters. However, his talk about the huge reserve fund was very strong.
Mr. Urhausen, although appearing somewhat green did make a good mention about the federal government timber payments, also he was the one that got the education property tax struck down, which was a classic example of taxation without representation.
Mayor Piercy made an interesting move when she talked about there being major problems in the city, being she's the incumbent and so many of the problems are around under her watch, though of course she was well polished, and do are rankings really matter if businesses don't seem to be coming into Eugene.
Jim Torrey seemed the strongest in the debate, his political skills are of course very strong and his experience is high. His responses, especially on public safety were quite strong and his response on not overpaying for the Amazon Headwaters as well as his willingness to take a 33% pay cut is quite populist.
The question segment didn't hurt anyone. Piercy attempted to score points off Torrey for the headwaters issue, but failed when Torrey pointed out that he supported fixing it, but he didn't want to pay 7 million dollars for it, as he didn't have to.

I would say that the overall winner was Mayor Torrey, with second place debateable between Mr.Urhausen and Mayor Piercy depending upon the opinion. Jim Ray had valid points but his lack of knowledge showed.

It's getting hot this Friday in Eugene, real hot.

It's time to take the cover off the swimming pool and stock up on the popsicles. The weather here in Eugene is expected to break the 90 degree mark this Friday. If you haven't put air conditioners in your windows yet, now is the time to do so. This temperature spike caps a season of wacky weather, including snow in April. However, before the event, the Presidential Candidate stopped by at the U of O Twilight Meet. He shook hands with some people as well as walked a short distance with U of O Track coach Vin Lananna along the infield. At a time, Obama hammed it up for the crowd. He jogged along the track and stepped over a hurdle. Unfortunately for the athletes, the random appearance disrupted their race warm up schedule as the meet came to a halt. Though it was unlikely that anyone minded.

He then continued on to his main speaking engagement which was as expected very well attended and introduced by Ernie Kent, but unlike the prior stop not easily visible on local TV. The speech was mostly similar to the first, but seemed to carry a slightly more general election twang. He then departed in his convoy SUVs bound for the next campaign stop in Bend. Stay tuned for news about future candidate visits to Oregon.

The biggest news about Obama's visit to Oregon was this comment in Beaverton.

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

The key word is 57 states. Mistake? Or pure stupidity? You be the judge.

Obama back in Eugene Tomorrow

While he may have the Democratic nomination about locked up, Barack Obama is returning to Eugene tomorrow. About 1747 people finished the full race. Of those, the top five males were: Matthew Norminton, James Rucker, Samuel Castonguay, and John Ngigi. Mr. Norminton's time was 2:22:04.

The top five females were: Erin Kaspar, Wendy Terris, Jaymee Marty, Lia Siemons, Holly Mcllvaine. Ms. Kaspar's time was 2:52:52. She later said that she didn't think there would be as many quick women showing up as the Olympic Trials was a few weeks ago, and she was right. This leads in to an important commentary about the timing of the marathon. While it is understandable that weather patterns may box us in on dates to hold the event, it may have been better to schedule the marathon at a time that would have attracted more world class athletes. I spoke with one of the starters who was trying to line up the starting line "in case a world record was to be challenged". While miracles have happened, this event can attract much more notoriety with a couple of nudges to Phil Knight and a time change

Other winners were, for the 5k, Joe Gould with a time of 15:07 and Andi Camp for the women with 18:06. The half marathon winners were Doug Howe, with 1:07:14 and Ceri Merrett with 1:19:51. And finally the winners of the half and full marathon wheelchair were Christopher Philpott with 1:37:02 (half) and Billie Worthen with 4:14:57 (full). We have the incumbent Kitty Piercy, against former Eugene mayor of many years, and my choice to become mayor, Jim Torrey. Also running is local conservative Nick Urhausen.

The rules on the mayoral elections are quite different than normal primary elections. First of all, all three candidates are "non-partisan", that said the order from most liberal to most conservative would be: Kitty Piercy (huge gap) Jim Torrey (medium gap) Nick Urhausen.

Secondly, if a candidate obtains a 50% majority in this primary, he/she is automatically (re)elected without there being a November contest at all.

Kitty
Piercy
Nonpartisan

Occupation: Mayor of Eugene
Occupational Background: State Representative; Public Affairs Director, Planned Parenthood; Teacher

Educational Background: Western Michigan University; California State University, Hayward

Prior Governmental Experience: House Democratic Leader; Commission for Child Care; Lane County Commission on Children and Families; Governor's Task Force on Juvenile Crime Prevention.

RE-ELECT MAYOR KITTY PIERCY
Taking on the tough issues
Bringing people together
Getting the job done

CHAMPIONING THE VALUES WE SHARE

"Piercy … has been guided through the brambles of Eugene politics by a deep-seated optimism. She doesn't just say that people in Eugene can find common ground to solve problems, she believes it." The Register-Guard, 12/16/07

"The men and women of Firefighters IAFF Local 851 share Mayor Piercy's interest in building a safe and liveable community. We are proud to support her efforts and look forward to working with her for another 4 years." Scott Olmos, President Eugene Firefighters IAFF Local 851

"By initiating and supporting collaborations such as the Sustainable Business Initiative and the West Eugene Collaborative, Kitty is helping Eugene solve problems together and in the open. That's great leadership." Mary O'Brien, environmental writer and activist

BUILDING A NEW ECONOMIC ENGINE FOR EUGENE

"Kitty Piercy knows a healthy business community is important—on equal grounds with good schools, efficient government, and a healthy environment. As a local small business owner, that's the type of leadership I want." Bob Bury, President, Euphoria Chocolate Co.

"Kitty listens to all sides, takes on the big issues, and has compassion and respect for everyone. She offers hopeful leadership during tough economic times." Susan Castillo, State Superintendent of Public Instruction

"I admire Mayor Piercy's tireless work promoting sustainable businesses and a healthy environment, and making Eugene a better place for us to live." State Representative Paul Holvey

Endorsed By:
Oregon League of Conservation Voters
Oregon Natural Resources Council Action PAC
Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon
SEIU Locals 49 and 503
Eugene Firefighters IAFF Local 851

www.kittypiercy.com

(This information furnished by Kitty Piercy for Mayor.)

My opinion: Kitty Piercy may talk all she wants about the environment, but, what about jobs? Recently, we have seen a couple of major manufacturers and a hospital move away. However, the most startling data is on crime. Last year violent crime almost doubled. Arson doubled, forcible rape tripled, and theft had a sizable increase as well (This is 100% authentic data compiled by the FBI and you can get the link here). Furthermore, the Mayor proposes that bikes now have their own special box ahead of cars at stoplights, like having that will help congestion or having a bunch of bikers swerving out into traffic to make it into the box would be safe. In fact, only 22% used them in their original trial. (for more info on its trial application in 1998, click here). Its nice that Mayor Piercy cares about the tress and bikes, but it would also be nice if she cared about our property and jobs as well.

Jim
Torrey
Nonpartisan

Occupation: Coach (35 yrs), Public Office Holder (12 yrs), Businessman (40+ yrs, ret.)

Occupational Background: Youth Sports, Local Government, Multiple Businesses

Educational Background: University of Oregon, Waldport High School

Prior Governmental Experience: Eugene-Mayor (2 terms), City Council, District 4J School Board, Budget Committee, Public Safety Committee; Lane County-Public Safety Coordinating Council, Workforce Advisory Board; Oregon-Dept. of Transportation Road Advisory Committee, Juvenile Crime Prevention Advisory Committee, Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee; US Conference of Mayors; Olympic Advisory Committee

Can We Cooperate? Eugene's neighborhoods and interest groups have sincere hopes for the future, but are known for their conflicting viewpoints. I retired as Mayor in 2004 with a reputation for creating cooperation. Since then, the Mayor's office has become a divisive influence in our city. No group should be ignored in a dialogue about our future.

Can We Support Public Safety? One of our top priorities MUST be effective public safety for our neighborhoods and schools. Public safety officers deserve our city's support and encouragement-certainly not the treatment they have received over the last three years.

Can We Balance Jobs and Environment? Eugene is blessed with natural gifts-and burdened with Oregon's lowest economic growth rate. We can have moderate growth so that our community is livable in all ways. By helping local firms create family wage jobs, we can create an affordable place to live, work and raise families without destroying our natural blessings.

Can We Fix our Potholes? Our community deserves health roads. We must prioritize general fund spending to address our most important needs.

Can We?

YES, EUGENE, WE CAN!

"Jim Torrey has our strong support. He understands the importance of public safety for our citizens." Doug Harcleroad, Lane County District Attorney; Willy Edewaard, President, Eugene Police Employees' Association

Awards: Oregon Mayor of Year, Oregon Education Volunteer of Year, Distinguished Service to Oregon Award, First Citizen of Eugene Award, City of Eugene Volunteer Award, 35-year Kidsports Coaching Award

(This information furnished by Jim Torrey for Mayor.)

My Opinion: Jim Torrey is quite experienced for a challenger, after all, he used to be mayor. By now most people either think of the Torrey years with nostalgia or with dismay. He was originally an official republican, but has now moved over to independent. It is interesting to see his motto: "Yes Eugene, We Can!!!" this is a pretty obvious rip-off of a certain democratic candidate for president. In an earlier letter to the editor of The Daily Emerald Torrey voiced his support for Obama (link here). Though there is a small chance that Torrey is using this view as a way to get the support of liberal voters, it would be wrong to assume that this is the reason. It is unquestionable that Torrey has the experience for the job, but does Eugene like the status quo?

Nick
Urhausen
Nonpartisan

Occupation: Social Security Claims Representative

Occupational Background: Bi-lingual Case worker for Texas Dept of Public Welfare, Harlingen, TX 10/72 thru 10/74. With that information, it will be next to impossible for Mr. Urhausen
to finish above third. However, those who are inclined to vote for Mr. Urhausen in the primary needn't
fear about the electoral consequences of doing so. As long as it would detract from Mayor Piercy's
50%, it will not hurt the chance of someone else becoming mayor, and the general election
would be between the top two vote getters

OVERALL: Jim Torrey is experienced, and with the current status of the Eugene economy, and
public safety, it is time for a change.

Ass-covering section!!!
(As always, I guarantee that all information (except the FBI crime stuff) was genuine and came direct from the official
Oregon Voter website, however this is NOT to be treated as the official information and you should follow
the earlier link if you want that info.)

The Local Elections

A look at the local and state elections: Format will be as follows:

Official information/spiel about the candidate (copied from http://www.state.or.us/elections/may202008/guide/cover.html)

My opinion

My endorsement (will include an endorsement of a candidate for both parties)

US Senate Race- incumbent Gordon H. Lee, 79US457; The Supreme Court held:

1) No one doubted a $1000 debt contracted before 1834, could be paid by 100 eagles coined after 1834, though they contained no more gold then 94 eagles coined when the contract was made.

FACT!
A $1000 debt before 1834 couldn't be paid by 100 eagles coined after 1834! The debt was revalued fairly, so it took 106 new eagles to pay it.

2) By the act of June 28, 1834, a new gold coin weight and value was adopted, and about 6% was taken from the weight of each dollar.

FACT!
No gold dollar existed in 1834 to take any weight from!

3) The effect of this [weight taking] was that all creditors suffered a corresponding loss; debts became solvable with 6% less gold than before.

FACT!
Because the 1834 act increased the value of the old eagle to $10.665, there was no corresponding loss. Debts didn't become solvable with 6% less gold than before!

4) The creditor who had $1000 due him 31 July 1834, the day before the act took effect, was entitled to $1000 of coined gold of the weight and fineness of the existing coinage. The day after, he was entitled to a sum 6% less in weight and market value, or to a smaller number of silver dollars.

FACT!
The creditor who had $1000 due him 31 July 1834, was entitled to 100 old eagles. The day after, due to Congress's equitable revaluation, he was entitled to a sum greater in weight and market value, making it mathematically impossible he was entitled to a smaller number of silver dollars.

ELECT LEITCH TO U.S. SENATE!

THE HONEST MONEY CANDIDATE!
THE BORDER BACKBONE CANDIDATE!

Suggested Personal Action: Reading THE FEDERALIST

(This information furnished by Gordon Leitch.)

My Opinion: I didn't know Ron Paul had an alias. 1834 was a long long time ago, and so while his comments about inflation may be valid back then, I don't think now is the time to change our entire economy, besides, we tried stopping inflation already, and it failed, and we don't have the gold (or have had for years) to have a standard like in his historical example. There are also a hundred other reasons not to support this guy, but you can probably find them pretty easily.

<img src="http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/may202008/guide/images/smithg_us.jpg" alt="Gordon H.
